The competition regulator in Africa’s copper producer Zambia has fined cement ‘oligopolistic’ producers Lafarge and Mpande Limestone 10% of annual turnover for two financial periods namely 2019 and 2020 for purported ‘unbridled business’ behaviours amounting to uncompetitive practices through purported price fixing. Zambia: BBMG Corporation and Tangshan Jidong Cement have resumed work on the development of a cement plant in Zambia, which requires a total investment of US$290m. The facility will produce 3000t/day of clinker and have a cement capacity of 1.3Mt/yr. Up to 60% of the funding will be secured from Bank of China (BOC), the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and South Africa-based Nedbank.
Lafarge Cement has increased the wholesale price of cement from K37,000 to K51,000 citing increased production cost as the Kwacha continues to weaken against the United States dollar. Company corporate affairs manager, Eugene Chungu, said in an interview in Lusaka that the increase has been necessitated by the continued devaluation of the Kwacha.
But in Zambia, the top cement producers like Sinoma, Lafarge, Dangote and Zambezi Portland seem to have higher retail prices than the lower production cement plants. The ZBT survey has revealed that Amaka Cement by Scirocco Enterprise and Great Wall Cement by Baudot are currently the lowest priced at about K110 per 50kg bag of 32.5N cement.
A recent random market survey conducted by the Zambian Business Times – ZBT on July 29, 2020 across the top four cities in Zambia that include Lusaka, Kitwe, Ndola and Livingstone showed that cement prices have been increased by about 25 to 30% from as low as K98 for a 50Kg to K120 and K125 in the last three (3) weeks.
